The benefits of using mulch in your garden
In a bush or forest setting the organic ground cover decomposes and naturally provides nutrients for trees and other plant life.
Because the urban environment is so different, a proper layer of mulch around your trees and shrubs will help to simulate a natural forest setting by returning nutrients back into the soil, which in turn, helps to replenish the soil.
Aside from aesthetic benefits, mulching moderates soil temperatures, helps in water retention, reduces competition from other plants and grass, reduces soil compaction and suppresses weeds.
Mulching is an important part of keeping soil moist, as it stops water from being evaporated. In an average season, efficient mulching can reduce watering by more than 60%, saving you time and money.
A thick layer of mulch (enough to block out light from the top of the soil) can prevent weeds from germinating and taking over the area. Indeed, in terms of preventing unwanted plant growth, it is a much more eco-friendly and attractive solution than plastic sheeting. Mulch can be made of a variety of materials, but is most often made from green waste such as the processed branches and leaves of felled trees.
By placing a layer of mulch around your trees and shrubs, you reduce the chance of lawnmower and weed trimmer damage. These benefits create a natural and healthy environment for your trees roots and help promote proper tree growth and survival.
How to use mulch in your garden and around your trees
Spread a 2- to 4-inch layer of mulch as far out as landscaping allows. Do not apply deeper than 4 inches and don't pile against the trunks of trees.
Wood chips, sterilized bark chips and composted leaves are the best materials for mulching. Use care and focus on the needs of the tree when applying mulch. Root suffocation can be the result if too much mulch is applied at one time. It is best to keep adding small amounts of mulch over time.
Organic mulching is better than non-organic fertilizers. Manufactured fertilizers can scorch roots and stunt growth if not properly mixed with the soil and in many cases provide no substantial benefit to a tree's health at all. Proper mulching with organic matter is the key.
